Default Brtonigla

BRTONIGLA, a town in the north-western part of Istria, 6 km southwest of Buje; elevation 141 m. It is located on the regional road Buje - Novigrad. Chief occupations include farming, viniculture and vegetable growing.

On this location once there was the Roman settlement Ortus Niger. The place was first mentioned in 1102. The neo-Baroque church of St. Zeno from 1861 was built on the location of an older church from 1480. The preserved structures from the time of the older church are the 36-m high bell tower, the bells (from 1512), the Baroque baptismal font from the 17th century and, located in the chapel of All Saints, the stone altar with a wooden retable and the sculptures of the Holy Virgin and saints. The village chapel of St. Roch, built on the location of an older church from the 14th century, features a wooden altar with the sculptures of the Holy Virgin and saints.

In nearby (3 km) Nova Vas is the small graveyard church of St. Michael from the 16th century.
